I could barely write a grocery list, let alone a weblog.

Peter and the Search for the American Dream

Posted by Peter Lee on October 30, 2005

From Saturday to Sunday, I was on the search for the American Dream. It was a long and tiring adventure, travelling by car, bicycle, foot, and bus. I stayed at people’s houses and experienced various events, including transit stations, Rosa, and making drivers mad by riding my bike in an unprofessional manner down the street. So anyway, pictures and words ahead that unfold the story.

The journey started here in Sarah’s driveway. Me (Peter), Travis, Phillip, Caleb, and Sarah had a brief meeting.

We all rode our bikes down to the Bellaire High School parking lot, except for Phillip, because he doesn’t know how to ride a bike.

Since he doesn’t know how to ride, we had to teach him.

We spent the rest of our time just riding and acting like teenagers with mischief.

Phillip ran into a trash can and cut his fingers pretty bad so we decided to go back home.

We sat in Sarah’s driveway and ate canned peaches.

After the peach eating, we decided to play darts.

Darts got boring and Phillip’s fingers were cleaned off so we headed back to the Bellaire High School athletics field.

We are the most notorious bicycle gang in Houston/Bellaire.

We ended up playing an epic game of baseball.

After the game, we all hopped on our bikes (except for Phillip because he’s a novice) and headed for the Baskin Robbins a mile or two away.

But before we got there, we decided to take a break at a local convenience store parking lot.

Along the way, I think I angered some drivers when I was drifting from sidewalk to street to sidewalk.

We finally got to the ice cream shop. I didn’t order anything but I bought a Pepsi.

We went back to Sarah’s house and then she kicked us out. We were left all alone in the streets with our bikes locked up in her garage.

We headed off to Border’s books by foot.

Caleb abandoned us. Now it was done to me, Phillip, and Travis. We decided to walk to Travis’ house.

But before we got there, we all relaxed at the park.

We got to Travis’ house and chilled on his trampoline for a while. We knew a big event was a-comin’!

Travis played with his dog, Peach.

We all left Travis’ house once we were cooled off and headed for the bus stop.

We all put in a dollar, got a transfer ticket, and headed towards Washington Avenue.

At Mary-Jane’s, the tickets at the door was $12 or $10 if you had a costume. I put on a wolf mask, paid $10, then walked into the club and took off the mask laugh-out-loud.

We ran into a few familiar faces. This is Andrew dressed like a blue man.

Among other faces, I met John from Kingwood. Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of him. I also met John’s friend, I forgot his name, but he was dressed like a fairy or butterfly or something. I owe him pictures.

The high point of our adventures (and probably my year) was approaching!

One of the last Rosa shows ever. I sang all their songs with them. Everyone did, really.

This picture is pretty bad but you can see Elle in her costume back there.

Once Rosa finished their set, we all left. We wandered around the parking lot for a while and then I remembered that I was supposed to buy a Rosa tshirt so I went back inside and looked around the merch booths but found none. Brad from Rosa was walking out with his guitar case so Travis, Phillip, and I followed him sort of. Then we stopped, hoping he’d come back. But he didn’t. So we walked back to the parking lot. Then he came back and I finally got the nerve to ask him if he had any t-shirts left but he said he was pretty sure that they were all out. I didn’t know his name was Brad so I just called him Mr. Rosa-Man. We talked for a while and then he said he was off to look for the rest of his band.

At this point, it was still Phillip, Travis, and I and we hung out at the parking lot a little longer until Phillip’s brother came to pick us up. He came and we all slept at Phillip’s house. We woke up and had breakfast.

We all watched Run Lola Run for a while.

We walked from Phil’s house to the bus stop. We took the bus and it dropped us off at South Rice. I ran to Sarah’s house while they all walked behind. Sarah’s mom and I talked for a bit about public transportation.

Eventually, Travis and Phillip finally got there.

I put my bandana on Sarah’s cat.

Then we all watched Fight Club and various episodes of The Critic.

After that, we all split up. I accidently went home with Sarah’s cell phone stuffed in my bike helmet.

The Pinky Whitehead CDs are all sold. Don’t try to buy them.

Rosa is playing on Saturday but it’s like $12 and I only have $5 and I’m doing stuff before that and I have no source of transportation. I’m drifting around from place to place like a damn pauper and I found a place to stay but I can’t organize a ride to get there and I can’t afford a cab! Someone plan something out for me.

I stayed after school to roll pennies for around 2 hours last week. I’ve been eating barley and lentil soup for every dinner for like a month now and I don’t know if it’s healthy or not or if I’m going to get scurvy or anemia.

The Paul Baribeau album is so good. You should all listen to it.

Some of you may or may not remember me speaking of the folk album I was working on over the summer, hoping to release it under Justin’s label, Secret Handshake Records, before school started. Well, school started and then I gave up. And then Justin moved. So the project was scrapped. Well, I have/had a 4 day weekend and I have around 3 or 4 projects due for school next week so I spent the time working on my songs instead of the projects because I hate school and all. I’m releasing it myself because I want it done my DIY way or whatever way you want me to say it so you could make fun of me.

It’s 3 songs about my friends and a Hank Williams cover. I tried to do my best Hank impression, I swear.

1. Caleb Coats
2. Phillip Don’t Believe in Gravity
3. Sarah in the Spring Time
4. A Mansion on the Hill (Hank Williams cover)

So yeah, the My Friends EP by Pinky Whitehead. Each album comes in a handmade CD sleeve with a lyrics sheet for only $2 each because I don’t feel like ripping people off this month. I’m pretty sure I’m making about a 10 cent profit out of this.

I don’t have many of these pressed and I’ve actually already sold a few so you should get on buying these.

I woke up this morning so I can ask my dad if he could drive me down to Chimney Rock so I can go to the protest but then I walked around my house and realized that nobody was home! So I was gonna call one of my friends and ask if they could drive me but I realized that I’m afraid of telephones and have no friends ugh!

I worked on writing out some Rosa chords last night, enjoy.

Rosa – Hitched Up Kids

Rosa – Greg Allen

I’m watching these live Defiance, Ohio videos at a house-show and I’m smiling so much right now.
